Chinoiserie – An enduring allure of the Far East – Leo Wong Ceramics Exhibition
Chinoiserie is a blend of elegant European designs with exotic Asian artistic traditions. Chinoiserie, from 'chinois' the French for Chinese, meaning 'after the Chinese taste'. It is a European interpretation, especially in the decorative arts, garden design, architecture, literature, theatre, and music. First appearing in the 17th century, this trend was popularised in the 18th century due to the rise in trade with China and the rest of East Asia.
As a ceramicist, Leo proudly presents ceramic as a medium to bring this important history of aesthetic and cultural interchange to Hong Kong audiences through the exhibition. We strive to showcase and introduce the infusion of two mainstream cultures – Asia and France, not only in a historical way, but also through a modern perspective.
The exhibition is a tribute to the cultural heritage between France and Asia. We also hope to take this chance to celebrate the long-standing affinity and contribution from French May Arts Festival to Asia.
